Cisco acquires WiFi data firm ThinkSmart Technologies

DNP Cisco acquires WiFi data analyst firm ThinkSmart Technologies

Networking kingpin Cisco announced on Wednesday that it had acquired ThinkSmart Technologies, a company that analyzes location data by using WiFi technology. ThinkSmart's tech reviews a network's infrastructure by evaluating the movement of its users, traffic patterns and hours of operation. The firm then uses these analytics to help companies optimize network and staffing configurations for business operations -- a long way of saying that it's smart enough to tell a company how to better manage information flows through a network. The terms of this deal have yet to be released, but Cisco seems to think this was a smart pick up.

Mayor Launches ?Reboot? of Lincoln Park Planning Process

City to Designate Design Consultant to Work with Park Users and Neighbors on New Set of Proposals to Upgrade Park Facilities

Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone announced today that he has directed the Office of Strategic Planning and Community Development (OSPCD) to appoint a design consultant to manage a new and more comprehensive planning process for proposed upgrades to recreational facilities at Lincoln Park.

?We?ve had repeated requests from community members for expanded input on the selection of design alternatives for this valuable citywide recreational facility,? said Mayor Curtatone.? ?A lot of work has gone into analyzing the best ways to upgrade the park so that it can support a wide variety of uses, and three public meetings were held based on a set of preliminary design proposals. But it?s clear that some residents have not been aware of past opportunities to participate in public discussions, or would like more opportunity to comment on each step of the process.? I think it?s also clear that there are strong differences of opinion about how best to proceed in fulfilling Lincoln Park?s potential as a community resource.? Rebooting the process and adding additional outside expertise should address these concerns.?

?Somerville residents in every neighborhood of the city understand that we need to provide improved year-round access to athletic fields and recreational facilities wherever we can,? said Curtatone. ?More and more sports organizations are seeking more and more practice and playing time.? Restarting the Lincoln Park process, and creating an approach that involves all stakeholders at every step will actually save time in the long run and keep us moving toward a facilities upgrade plan that represents the fullest possible range of public input and review.?

The City had originally sought public comment on a plan to renovate Lincoln Park based on community requests for, among other improvements, a synthetic turf sports field, a grass field for passive recreation, renovation of the existing basketball courts and the creation of a seasonal ice rink. The plan also necessitated the construction of a new structure to house ice rink infrastructure as well as bathrooms, concessions and a skate rental area.

?The original design consultant did an outstanding job with the specific parameters we initially established, but we never asked for a truly comprehensive approach to reimagining Lincoln Park from the ground up.? That will be the new mission ? and since we plan to restart the process, we?re suspending public meetings until we can start fresh.? Curtatone said.? ?We expect the selection process to take several weeks.?

Angry Birds sequel 'Bad Piggies' launches tomorrow, we go hands-on

Angry Birds sequel 'Bad Piggies' launches today on iPad, we go handson

Finnish game studio Rovio went from relatively unknown to center stage with the Angry Birds franchise. And in record time, too -- the first Angry Birds landed on Apple's iOS App Store in December 2009, less than three years ago, and has since become an international sensation. The birds spawned a flock of sequels, branded tie-ins, and tons of merchandise. All this adds up to quite a bit of chicken scratch for Rovio, and also quite a bit of pressure to keep the money train rolling.

Today marks Rovio's first true sequel to the original Angry Birds, and it's focused on the other side of the farm: the pigs. Enter Bad Piggies. Unlike Angry Birds, Bad Piggies isn't about flinging anything towards a complicated structure in order to knock it down. Instead, it's about moving one very green, goofy sounding pig to various points on a map to collect items and reach a goal -- it's much more Cut the Rope than Angry Birds. The same physics-based game mechanics are at play in Bad Piggies that made both Cut the Rope and Angry Birds so popular, and they're just as fun in this time around. But how do you get said piggy to the goals? You build a contraption, of course.

Each level starts with a build section, allowing players to create all types of vehicles in order to transport the pig from point A to point B (while grabbing collectibles along the way). Only a small handful of build options are available, keeping Bad Piggies just as speedy of a game -- to pick up and play while commuting or while waiting at the dentist's office -- as its wildly successful progenitor. It's hard to say if Bad Piggies will recapture the success that Rovio found with Angry Birds proper, but all the hallmarks are there: quick, fun gameplay, colorful characters, goofy sounds, and accessibility (we couldn't help but get all three stars on every level, but you don't have to in order to proceed, should it prove too difficult). Bad Piggies launches tomorrow morning for iOS devices, Mac, and Android.

Lynyrd Skynyrd face Confederate flag flap

J. Countess / Getty Images file

By Randee Dawn, TODAY contributor

To many above the Mason-Dixon line, the Confederate flag is a symbol of a divided country and an empathy with slavery and racism. To many below it, however, the "Rebel" flag is a symbol of unity, heritage and standing up for state's rights. To Lynyrd Skynyrd, it's all part of the band's brand -- good-time Southern rock ("Sweet Home Alabama") made by men with flowing locks and cranked-up guitars -- and it's made an appearance at virtually every one of their shows since they formed in the 1960s.?

But as band members learned recently, it's not so easy to lower the flag.?

It all started on Sept. 9, when three members of the band (Gary Rossington, Rickey Medlocke and Johnny Van Zant) appeared on CNN to discuss their new album, "Last of a Dyin' Breed." Toward the end of the discussion, interviewer Fredricka Whitfield asked about the band appearing to disassociate themselves from the flag.

"It became such an issue about race and stuff where we just had it in the beginning because we were Southern, and that was our image back in the'70s and late '60s ... but I think through?the years, people like the KKK and skinheads and people kind of kidnapped the Dixie or Rebel flag from the Southern and the heritage of the soldiers," explained guitarist and sole original band member Rossington. "We didn?t want that to go to our fans or show the image like we agreed with any of the race stuff or any of the bad things.?

That didn't go well with some fans; messages left on the CNN board indicated they felt that leaving the flag out of the routine was a slap in the face and kowtowing to political correctness. "By ignoring and denying the flag that is part of their history, they are leaving a large segment of their fan base behind," wrote G.D. Smith on the boards. "It's a shame that money is now more important than honor or heritage."

"We hope you never come back to 'Sweet Home Alabama,'" wrote another fan, L.E. Thompson.

Well, never let it be said that Skynyrd isn't responsive to its fans; last Friday, Rossington posted a message on the band's website to "clarify the discussion of the Confederate Flag" in the interview, writing:

"Myself, the past members and the present members (that are from the South), are all extremely proud of our heritage and being from the South. We know what the Dixie flag represents and its heritage; the Civil War was fought over States rights.

"We still utilize the Confederate (Rebel) flag on stage every night in our shows, we are and always will be a Southern American Rock band, first and foremost. We also utilize the state flag of Alabama and the American flag as well, ?cause at the end of the day, we are all Americans. I only stated my opinion that the confederate flag, at times, was unfairly being used as a symbol by various hate groups, which is something that we don?t support the flag being used for. The Confederate flag means something more to us, Heritage not Hate?"

And based on the comments left on the website following that post, this is an issue that remains still unresolved -- but many are backing up his decision to try and find a balance.

"I think all of us do well to let our conscience be our guide, and Mr. Rossington has given an example," wrote Walk In My Shadow.

And, added Toolbox, "Lynyrd Skynyrd is a true American band and are proud of their Southern heritage. Do you think for one minute that they would denounce their Southern roots?? Your wrong. Just listen to their music."

Baby boomer nutrition: Health power to the (plant) people | Mind ...

Mind Your Body TV Episode 42 with Sharon Palmer, R. D.

If registered dietician and food and nutrition journalist Sharon Palmer could be granted a couple of wishes, one would be that we all ?eat more whole plants.? The other would be that we read her terrific new book, ?The Plant-Powered Diet, The Lifelong Eating Plan for Achieving Optimal Health, Beginning Today.?

At 412 super-informative pages, Palmer?s book reminds us in accurate detail of the dangers of eating too much meat. Meat consumption has doubled between 1909 and 2007. Red meat represents 58 percent of the meat we consume, she says.

To begin to cut your appetite for it, consider the environmental issues that include ?antibiotic resistance, caused by overuse of antibiotics in farm animals, to toxic manure lagoons that pollute local waters and spread foodborne pathogens.?

Then consider these.

Top 11 reasons to cut back on (or cut out) meat

It?s ok to ?veg out? on these healthy food choices.

1) It can hurt your heart: People who eat red meat are more likely to have high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels.

2) It ups your risk of Type 2 diabetes: Enough said.

3) It may pump up inflammation: That can promote a strong of chronic diseases like heart disease, type 2 diabetes and Alzheimer?s disease, Palmer writes.

4) It raises your risk of metabolic syndrome: The term refers to a collection of unhealthy factors that include a large waist circumference, high triglyceride levels, lowHDLor ?good cholesterol,? high blood sugar and high blood pressure.

5) It may boost your toxin load: Cooking and processing some meats produces dangerous, carcinogenic compounds. Many toxins are also stored in the fat of animals.

6) It can promote antibiotic resistance: This is thanks to overuse of antibiotics in farm animals, as above.

7) It may escalate your risk of cancer (especially colorectal).

8) It can add pounds: Meats are higher in calories and fat than most whole plant foods.

9) It may cut your lifespan.

10) It magnifies your carbon foot print.

Eat more of these

These are your friends: vegetables, cooked beans and peas, fruits, whole grains, nuts, seeds. You can add them into your diet slowly, and soon, you won?t miss that meat. Bon appetit!

Simply Suzanna: Organizing Photos and my scrapbooking dillema

I've got a box of pictures. A box bigger than I should have for my 27 years of life. Oh I should mention that I l also have about 20 albums filled with scrapbooks and pictures. Not good for my minimalist heart.
As I'm getting ready to move (for the 8th time in 5 years!) I'm really trying to consolidate, sort and donate my things. I've tackled the kitchen, my closet, and my storage closet. I set aside a few boxes from the storage closet that I just didn't want to tackle at the time and one was this dreaded box of pictures. The wedding is so close now that I know I'm not going to be able to do anything about it right now, but I've been thinking about after the wedding. I'm ready to get down to business and organize this mess!

Here's my dillema: To scrapbook or not?

My Photo To Do List:

  • Wedding book- for BL and me and both sets of Parents (will probably include engagement photos)
  • Yearbooks: 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012
  • Vacations: Florida 2006, Boston 2010, East 1999 or so, Dale Hollow twice, and several others I'm forgetting
  • Senior Trip and Open House (yes, from High School)

The Methods:

Old-Fashioned Scrapbooking

Pros
  1. I have a ton of paper, empty books, page protectors, stickers etc.. to use up.
  2. Possibly a cheaper option considering #1.
  3. I like to do "crafty" projects, it's stress relief for me
Cons-
  1. Takes up a lot of SPACE (supplies spread out everywhere while you work, ugh... and the finished product tends to take up more space on a shelf than digital)
  2. I would have to get a bunch of prints to fill in gaps where I didn't get pictures printed
  3. I can only work on this when I'm at home surrounded by supplies
  4. takes more time.

Digital

Pros
  1. It's fast?
  2. Neat and Clean looking. I can make similar sized books that would look great lined up on a shelf or stacked on the coffee table.
  3. We can order duplicates for family??
  4. Takes up less storage space (I could also get rid of all of my supplies!)
Cons
  1. Less personal in some ways. It's not my own handwriting and it's not the same feeling as paper and embellishments layered together.?
  2. Requires time in front of the computer. some days after work this is not what I want to do. But who knows, after the wedding I may not be working at a desk job all day.?
  3. Will cost money.

The Segal Guide to Fasting For Yom Kippur - Local Jewish News

By: Michael M. Segal, MD, PhD
Each year on Yom Kippur, Jews wish each other a khatima tova (a good seal in the Book of Life) and tolerable fast. The route to a khatima tova is beyond the scope of this article; the route to an easy fast is simpler to describe. The following are the essentials of human physiology that will help you have a tolerable fast on Yom Kippur:

Don?t get thirsty:

Most people think the difficulty about fasting is feeling ?hungry?. However, avoiding thirst is much more important for how you feel. Not only do you avoid the discomfort of thirst but you are also well hydrated and swallow frequently, so your stomach does not feel as empty.

One important way to remain well hydrated is to avoid drinks or foods that cause your body to get rid of water. Such foods and drinks include alcohol, tea, caffeinated coffee and chocolate. Another important rule is to avoid consuming much salt. Salt causes a person to feel thirsty despite having a ?normal? amount of water, because extra water is needed for the extra salt. For this reason you should avoid processed foods containing lots of salt such as pickles, cold cuts, or cheese. Most tomato sauces, canned fish and smoked fish have a lot of added salt. Since Kosher meat has a high salt content it may be best to choose a main course such as fresh fish, canned no-salt tuna fish or a de-salted meat such as boiled chicken.

By avoiding these types of foods and drinks in the several hours before a fast, you can avoid either losing water or needing extra water. Other actions that cause the body to lose water, such as perspiring in warm clothing, should also be avoided during the fast.

Don?t start the pre-fast meal on a full stomach:

The pre-fast meal often begins at 5 PM, so a large lunch could prevent you from eating enough immediately before the fast. It is best to have a small lunch, or no lunch at all. A large breakfast early in the day based on cereals, breads and fruits can provide the energy you need during the day, yet these high-fiber foods will be far downstream by the time of the pre-fast meal and will not keep you from eating enough food at the pre-fast meal. A large breakfast is also helpful because it stretches the stomach. After eating breakfast, it is best to consume beverages during the day. This will not fill you up, since liquids are absorbed quickly, and this will ensure that you have absorbed enough fluids during the day to start the pre-fast meal being well hydrated. Be sure to avoid beverages with alcohol or caffeine. You should also drink at least a glass or two of fluids with the pre-fast meal because many foods need extra water to be digested properly.

Eat foods that are digested slowly:
Include some foods high in oils and fats in the pre-fast meal, since such foods delay emptying of the stomach and effectively prolong your meal. However, beware of fatty meats or salted potato chips that could load you up with too much salt. Salads and other high fiber foods that are so important in one?s normal diet should be de-emphasized for the pre-fast meal since they travel quickly through the digestive system. Fruit, despite its high fiber content, is worthwhile since it carries a lot of water in a ?time-release? form.

Don?t get a headache:
Withdrawing from caffeine produces a headache in people who drink several cups of coffee a day. If you consume this much caffeine in coffee or other foods or drinks you should prepare yourself for the caffeine-free period by reducing or eliminating caffeine from your diet in the days or weeks before Yom Kippur. Don?t try to get through the fast by drinking coffee right before Kol Nidre, since this will cause you to lose a lot of water.

Make the meal tasty enough so people will eat:

The pre-fast meal doesn?t have be bland. Spices such as lemon or herbs are fine for fasting, but salt and monosodium glutamate should be reduced as much as possible.

Don?t do a complete fast if you have certain medical problems:
People with medical conditions such as diabetes should consult their doctors and rabbis before fasting. Certain medications need to be taken during Yom Kippur, and it is important to swallow them with enough water to avoid pills getting stuck on the way to the stomach and damaging the esophagus. Fasting by women who are pregnant or breast feeding can also be dangerous. If a young person who has not fasted much before has unusual difficulty fasting you should discuss this with your doctor since this happens in some serious metabolic problems in which fasting can be very dangerous.

Don?t eat improperly after Neila:
Even people who have prepared well for fasting will be hungry after Neila. Be sure not to eat food too quickly at the post-fast meal. Begin the break-fast meal with several glasses of milk or juice: these put sugar into the bloodstream and occupy space in the stomach, discouraging you from eating too rapidly. Also be careful about eating high salt foods such as lox, since you will still be a little dehydrated and will need to drink a lot of fluids to avoid waking up extremely thirsty in the early morning hours. If you take vitamin C, be sure that you are fully re-hydrated beforehand, because one of the vitamin?s breakdown products can precipitate out in your urine if you are dehydrated, causing kidney stones, which are painful and dangerous.

These preparations for the fast of Yom Kippur will be different from your normal routine, but they can serve as a concrete reminder of the approaching Day of Atonement.

Free Internet Marketing Ebooks ? How to Get Quality Instead of Junk

Every day more and more people find out that there are ways of making money on the Internet. No matter where they decide to begin their journey, very soon they get bombed and spammed with various offers and promises of small fortunes and financial independence. Truth is that making money on the Internet is not so easy as some people might say.

The biggest flaw is that there are many ?experts? and ?gurus? trying to sell their overpriced and expensive products to the, more or less, desperate audience. Anyone who has been involved in this business, one way or another, knows that there are a few people who make monstrous money from the Internet, few dozens of those who can be tagged as ?average? Internet marketers and money makers, and a vast majority of people who either end up with less money than they had when they started, or just give up thinking that it is impossible.

Yes, it often seems and appears to be impossible, although it isn?t. Everybody talks about setting up professional websites, building a list, running some PPC campaigns, optimizing sites for search engines and many, many other stuff that may seem logic, but also may not work for everyone. But, of course, everybody claims that only their method, strategy, tactics, whatever, works! Truth is that there are dozens of ways. That is because of the very nature of the Internet. So, how to find out what are those and which one would potentially work best for you?!

Well, the hardest and probably the not so clever way is to purchase every eBook you think could prove useful to your cause. If you want to engage in, for example, affiliate marketing, you could, for the sake of education and finding out how to establish your business in a proper way, buy every ebook, course, manual, training about affiliate marketing.

The only thing that is certain is that you will have a lot less cash in your pocket or on your credit card.

The unfortunate fact is that Internet marketing and making money online are two very under-served niches and markets. If you are reading this article, chances are that you have been scammed or ripped of in a certain way. Trust me, I have also!

Well, what are we going to do? I think it would be wise to stop for a moment and stop chasing every dream of stockpiles of cash and overnight riches. OK? You cool now? Good, keep on reading.

What we need is, of course, some basic knowledge. If you spent huge money on expensive products, courses and manuals, you probably have some idea or a general point of view what is necessary for a successful online business or a money making system, call it as you wish.

Still, you probably have a few gaps or holes in your knowledge about the certain problematics. Everybody does. That is not a shame. And if you are a total newcomer, who doesn?t have any idea or clue where and how to start, then read carefully.

You NEED those ebooks about Internet marketing and making money online. Maybe that word ?need? is a little exaggerated, but think of it this way. How much time did it take for other people, who now live entirely from their online income streams, to get to the level where they are now? I bet it took them many months, even years of hard-work, testing, thinking of new strategies, a few inventions now and then, probably a dozens of fails, before they finally realized what is the right way!

Now imagine yourself. You are now probably in the same situation they were in months or years before. You have 2 possibilities. You can try your own luck, follow your own ideas and hope that they will work. Alternatively, you can buy ebooks from established and reputable Internet marketers and pick a piece of their brain. Even better, you can get them for free.

Wonder how? Well, there are a few ways. There is one clever approach how successful or a little less successful marketers build their lists. It?s called Internet marketing giveaway. A group of marketers gather together in a JV (joint venture) and offer free products ? software, ebooks, video trainings, free memberships to various sites etc., in exchange for your e-mail address. They are usually time limited, something like 5-10 days. The downsides of such events are following:

1. The free products or items offered are often of low or no quality, with a few exceptions

2. Your e-mail will probably get tons of spam or just a little less spam messages promoting expensive ?get rich quick? and ?get rich overnight? products.

There are many sites offering a wide range of ebooks, from agriculture to young adult literature. There are always a few dozens of Internet marketing ebooks available to download, but since there aren?t so many available, chances to download something valuable and useful are even lower than in standard giveaway events.

Internet marketing forums are great places to get dozens of valuable tips, and, if luck is on your side, you can receive a few very useful ebooks or reports. I am speaking from my personal experiences.

However, it still may not be enough to satisfy your needs. That is why I decide to create a small and simple ebooks blog where, from time to time, I write honest and unbiased reviews of the ebooks I manage to buy or get for free. Not all of the ebooks are free, but I don?t even want you to buy. I really want you to download, if possible, all of the free ebooks I?ve linked to throughout my posts, and start building your online business, instead of chasing wild dreams.

But I want you to act, just reading them won?t make you money. That is one of the biggest mistakes I?ve been doing. I have literally swallowed tons of educational materials, but never transformed that into action. So, go there, link is located few lines below, download whatever ebooks you find useful, and start your Internet marketing career.

Personal recommendations

They say ? free is worthless! I say ? it?s not! Visit my ebooks blogspot [http://cheap-i-m-ebooks.blogspot.com/] where you can download various internet marketing and money making ebooks for free or at a very fair price.

They also say ? article marketing! I say ? article marketing and guest blog posting. Discover and use the huge impact of guest posting at other people?s blogs to your site?s search engine rankings!!! suggestions about ebooks he suggests.

Need Advice To Help You Manage Arthritis? Check Below For ...

There are many effective treatments that will relieve your pain while keeping your joints as healthy as possible. With the advice in this article regarding arthritis and pain management, you can begin learning more to put more into your treatment.

You should take a yoga class in order to improve your health and well-being if arthritis plagues you. Yoga incorporates many stretches, which calms your mind. This helps anyone dealing with arthritis. If you would prefer not to join a yoga class, you can purchase a yoga routine DVD instead. Fitness DVDs offer almost the same level of interaction as a class right in your living room.

TIP! Eat snacks to increase your nutrition and help you to be more active, though arthritis might seem to keep you down. Eat healthy options like fruit, nuts, seeds, organic protein bars, or other healthy store-bought items.

If you have osteoarthritis in either one or both of your knees, talk to your physician about electrical stimulation treatments. Electrical stimulation has been shown to produce good results in mitigating knee swelling, and is also effective for reducing pain associated with arthritis.

It can be very beneficial if you catch your arthritis early. One way to prevent the onset of arthritis is to practice good typing habits. Concentrate on keeping your hands at the same level as your keyboard and place a raised pad beneath your mouse. These things will let you type more easily without harming your hands, and helps prevent future arthritis problems.

Get the right tools. The right instruments can help you perform jobs with arthritis. Many products exist to help someone that suffers from arthritis do simple tasks, such as special can openers and zipper pulls. Your life will be a lot easier when you replace the tools you cannot use with accessible tools designed to meet your needs.

TIP! It can be beneficial to detect arthritis symptoms early to prevent the onset of the disease. A good way to prevent arthritis is to develop proper typing habits.

Make sure to get your eyes checked on a regular basis if you suffer with rheumatoid arthritis. Having this condition leaves you open for more eye problems, and if left unchecked, it can lead to blindness. Some of the symptoms you should look for are redness, blurry vision, and light sensitivity. If you tell your doctor about any sight issues you are having because of arthritis, they can help you.

Massage may be helpful if you have arthritic hands. This can not only relax you but can also ease the pressure that?s in your joints. Dealing with pain is easier when you are relaxed. Take deep breaths, and try to enjoy the massage.

Look out for new treatments. Many times, doctors will not try something new with a patient unless the current program is ineffective. However, if you hear of a new treatment that you feel is better suited to you, then it is up to you to discuss it with your doctor and see how they feel about moving over to the new plan.

TIP! You can increase your chances of developing arthritis with smoking. If you happen to be a smoker, think about quitting now.

Developing a solid plan is integral for your arthritis. Arthritis can be unpredictable, and therefore it is wise to always be ready to manage issues that arise. If you have a long job, make sure that you take breaks to reduce the overall pain that you feel.

In order to lessen arthritis symptoms, it is important that you stay in shape. If you are unable to participate in weight-bearing exercises, think about joining water aerobics. The water will give you support and will massage your muscles as you are doing the exercises. When you are suffering from arthritis, you will definitely find relief with water therapy.

To help relieve your pain and joint stiffness, you can rub them with castor oil. The massaging action is relaxing and the castor oil is good for the joints. Castor oil helps loosen stiff joints, while massaging the joints helps increase the amount of blood flowing to them so that pain and swelling goes down.

TIP! Be sure that your symptoms are actually arthritis, and you are not suffering from another illness. If you do not get a correct diagnosis, you could simply be wasting your precious time and money in trying to rid yourself of pain.

If you are fighting with the pain that arthritis brings, try to lose a few pounds. Obesity greatly increases the amount of inflammation and pain associated with arthritis. Carrying around those extra pounds can put pressure on the joints of your body and exacerbate the condition. Attacks will likely become less common and less intense when weight is lost; making weight loss a part of an arthritis treatment regimen is terrific idea.

The environment can affect your arthritis, so think about what you can do to improve things. Examine every detail of your home life and make any necessary changes. You should think about replacing handles on drawers to be bigger, or use pens with better grips. This could make your everyday life much easier.

If you suffer from chronic arthritis pain, it is important that you have a reliable support system. You should have a doctor you can go to regularly to check on the progression of your issue. Explain your issue to family and friends so they?ll understand and help out as needed.

You cannot treat arthritis without understanding more about this condition. The more you know, the more chances you will have to find something that works. The tips you have just read are great for understanding the symptoms of arthritis and how you can go about treating your arthritis.

Egypt-based group claims Israel border attack

A shadowy group inspired by al-Qaida and based in Egypt's Sinai peninsula has claimed responsibility for a shootout along the Israeli-Egyptian border in which three militants and an Israeli soldier were killed.

Ansar Jerusalem, in a statement posted on militant forums late Saturday, linked the attack to a video denigrating the Prophet Muhammad that has sparked protests across the Muslim world. It says the militants were Egyptian.

It said the operation was a "disciplinary attack against those who insulted the beloved Prophet." The low-budget film was produced in the United States.

The group said three militants had crossed the border into Israel early Thursday and remained hiding until midday Friday, when they saw and attacked an Israeli patrol.

Additional oil response capability needed in Alaska

Send this article to Promobot

September 21st 5:51 pm | Denise Krepp Print this article ? Email this article ? Create a Shortlink for this article

Much attention has been focused on the Department of Interior's decision to allow Shell to begin drilling off of the Alaskan coast. Surprisingly, little attention has been paid to the Coast Guard's ability to respond to any oil spills that might occur as a result of this additional drilling. The Coast Guard is the lead agency for Federal oil spill response and it does not currently have enough assets in place to respond in a timely manner to a significant oil spill in Alaskan waters.

When building new subdivisions, land developers construct new fire houses. Similar thinking was not applied to the development of the Chukchi Sea. In 2008, the Federal government auctioned off leases to drill in the area. Shell, Statoil, ConoccoPhillips, and others bid over 2.6 billion dollars for the opportunity to drill. None of this money went to building additional Coast Guard vessels that could be used to respond to an oil spill.

Today, the Coast Guard only has twelve large ships stationed in Alaska; to cover over 33,00 miles of coastline. Two of the twelve, a flight-deck equipped cutter and a 225-foot buoy tender with some ice capabilities have been dedicated to the Shell operation. There is no clear indication whether the remaining ten will be similarly dedicated to the future Statoil and ConoccoPhillips operations. If they are, the Coast Guard's ability to fulfill its remaining missions including aids to navigation; fisheries and customs enforcement; and search and rescue will be severely hampered.

The Coast Guard should not attempt to close the asset gap by moving ships and helicopters from the lower 48 states to Alaska during the summer drilling months. Similarly, the Coast Guard should not plan on surging assets from the lower 48 states if an oil spill were to occur in Alaska. The summer months are prime hurricane months and the Coast Guard had to surge helicopters from Alaska to assist with Hurricane Katrina.

Instead of moving around its limited assets, the Coast Guard should work with the Department of Interior to use the funds gained from the drilling leases to finance additional Coast Guard ships and helicopters. Shell is merely the first company to begin drilling. ConoccoPhilips wants to begin drilling in 2014 and others soon after. Given the long construction time for these additional assets, the collaboration between the two federal entities should occur immediately.

Lastly, the Department of Interior should clearly assess the state of the Coast Guard assets in Alaska before approving ConoccoPhillips permit application. If two of the current twelve ships are dedicated to the Shell drilling operation then there are two less to dedicate to ConoccoPhillips and the remainder of the Coast Guard mission requirements. These missions requirements are equally as important as responding to oil spills and are equally as important in bringing in jobs and money to the state of Alaska.

Booze and bullets? Firing range/bar irks neighbor

By Sevil Omer, NBC News

Owners of a Georgia gun shop have received the go-ahead from local officials to serve alcohol at a proposed indoor firing range, riling one neighbor who says booze with bullets is a bad mix.

Kristina Brown and her husband own the Lakeside Guns Shop in Acworth, Ga., and are building a $3.5 million gun range in nearby Powder Springs, north of downtown Atlanta, according to WSB-TV in Atlanta.

The Powder Springs City Council voted 4-1 Monday to approve their application for?a permit to serve alcohol in a lounge at The Governor?s Club, according to WSB-TV.

Brown?s new business plan has upset at least one area resident.

"I mean, that's just stupid," Traci Hart, a mother of three, told WSBT. "We don't need drunk people running around in and out of the neighborhood.?

Watch the Top Videos on NBCNews.com?

Brown said Georgia law now allows people with gun permits to carry firearms into businesses that serve alcohol. She noted that her gun club is "taking it even a step further," according to WSB-TV.

Governor?s Club customers who order alcoholic beverages at the bar will have their identification flagged and won't be allowed to return to the firing range, Brown told WSB-TV.

The?Browns' idea might be more about advertising, said Paul Bastean, a sergeant with the Lake St. Louis Police Department and owner of Ultimate Defense, a firing range and training center north of St. Louis.

?There?s a mess of beer-baiting bullet shops scattered across the South,? Bastean told NBC News.??While it?s not a ridiculously new concept, the whole idea of shooting guns and having ammo with booze is just crazy, a bad, bad?idea.?

Bastean speculated that the Governer's Club owners were hoping to attract more business to their bar by linking it to the adjacent firing range.

?They have a pretty elaborate building and business," Bastean said, adding, "I think they may be wanting to draw more people in by saying beer and bullets?at the firing range, than there is a bar next door to the gun club."

The Browns told local media they?hoped to open The Governor's Club in late December.

Suu Kyi: 'I just didn't know how to give up'

Aung San Suu Kyi shares her message for people around the world struggling for freedom and democracy. NBC's Ann Curry reports.

Ann Curry, NBC News Special Correspondent

NEW YORK ? Myanmar?s pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi was one of the world's most famous political prisoners until her release two years ago.

After 15 years under house arrest, NBC News? Ann Curry asked her Friday what her message is to other people all over the world struggling for freedom?

?It's the same struggle for everybody everywhere; because unless we are free we can't really realize our own potential. And if we can't realize our own potential we are like a crippled tree. It would be a stunted growth,? Suu Kyi replied. ?

Now on a 17-day coast-to-coast tour of the United States, earlier this week Suu Kyi met President Barack Obama at the White House and received the Congressional Gold Medal for her long fight for democracy in a country ruled by army generals since 1962.

She sat down with Curry on Friday morning and discussed her emergence from house arrest, her new political role in Myanmar and what kept her going all those years.

'I just didn't know how to give up'
During her years under house arrest in the country also known as Burma, Suu Kyi was separated from her family, and unable to see her husband, British academic Michael Aris, before his death from cancer in 1999. Suu Kyi was released in late 2010 and has since joined hands with members of the former ruling junta that detained her to push ahead with political reform.

Myanmar opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi has been presented with Congress' highest award, the Congressional Gold Medal in honor of her leadership and commitment to human rights in Burma.

Curry asked her what sustained her over all those years?

?Well, I just didn't know how to give up,? Suu Kyi said with a smile. ?I never thought of needing anything to sustain me. It never occurred to me that I should give up.?

She also credited the perseverance she learned as a child from her mother and father, Aung San, a Burmese independence hero and founder of the modern Burmese army.

?I was brought up by my mother very strictly,? she said. ?She always spoke about the importance of a sense of duty and if you take up something you just don't drop it.?

She said she also felt an obligation to see her father?s dream of an independent country come true.

??My mother always brought me up to understand that my father loved his country and of course I always knew that he didn't live to see his dream come true. He died just before we regained independence. And I suppose always I wanted to realize his dream for him.?

Suu Kyi honored with Congress' highest award

Possible presidential run?
Suu Kyi won the 1991 Nobel Peace Prize for championing democracy in opposition to the military junta that held her under house arrest for years.?

Suu Kyi's election to parliament in April helped to transform the pariah image of Myanmar and persuade the West to begin rolling back sanctions after a year of dramatic reforms, including the release of about 700 political prisoners.

As for her house arrest, she said she learned at least one important skill during that time: how to listen.

?I learned to listen very well because I listened to the radio about five, six hours a day. And this ability to listen has stayed me- has stood me in very good stead,? she said. ?It helps you to understand how people's minds work. How other people think. What their point of view is.?

Ease sanctions on Myanmar, Suu Kyi says on U.S. tour

She is confident in her country?s future ? but did not rule out the possibility of ever running for president of Myanmar.

?No, if you're a politician you never rule out such a possibility,? she said.

Suu Kyi is currently in New York, where 40 years ago she worked for the United Nations. She'll then travel to Kentucky, Indiana and California to speak on campuses and meet Burmese expatriates.

Nano-engineering electrodes to give tiny generators a boost

ScienceDaily (Sep. 20, 2012) ? Could our waste be part of the answer to humanity's energy problems? Some researchers think so, thanks to bacteria that chow down on everything from sewage to heavy metals and give off electricity as one of their own waste products.

But as with many great ideas, the devil is in the details. OIST's Biological Systems Unit is one of the research groups now working on making waste-fueled microbial fuel cells (MFCs) cheap and efficient enough for real-world applications.

One great challenge in achieving that goal is designing sturdy, cheap electrodes for MFCs that conduct electricity well, resist corrosion, and won't poison bacteria that cling to their surfaces. To this end, the Nanoparticles by Design Unit is working with the Biological Systems Unit to build and test new types of nanoparticle-studded electrodes. The idea is to coat a core of cheap material with a very thin layer of a more expensive, biocompatible metal, then stick the resulting nanoparticles onto the surface of a carbon electrode. In addition to harnessing the properties of the expensive metal at minimal cost, this will increase the surface area of the electrode so that it can host more electricity-generating bacteria.

Other researchers have found that nanoparticle-studded carbon electrodes increase the electricity output of MFCs up to 20-fold compared with plain carbon electrodes; Nanoparticles by Design Unit head Mukhles Sowwan hopes to increase this by experimenting with different sizes, compositions, and methods of pinning the nanoparticles to the electrode surface. Says Sowwan, "I believe that this innovative multidisciplinary approach in applying cutting-edge research could lead to the development of efficient microbial fuel cells."
